NACOGDOCHES, Texas – A historic unbeaten streak was snapped on Sunday as the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer team fell at Stephen F. Austin 7-0 in its first conference loss of the year.
The Islanders (5-3-5, 2-1-2 SLC) had been the last team without a loss in conference play this year, not having dropped a decision within their first four games of the slate. It was A&M-Corpus Christi's best start in program history, which helped fuel a seven-game undefeated streak which also broke a program best.
SFA (8-2-2, 5-1 SLC) maintained their top ranking in the Southland Conference standings with the offensive barrage to also be the first team to knock off the Islanders this season. The Lumberjacks outshot the Islanders 19-5.
Seniors
Morgan Westbury and
Megan Guy each got off two shots, with Westbury getting close for an attempt in the second half with an on-goal shot to the bottom center that the SFA goalie was able to defend. Freshman Shannan Delaney also tried to spark some offense with a shot on goal to the top left corner in the 79th minute which was also knocked out.
It wrapped up A&M-Corpus Christi's longest road swing of the season, as the Islanders will head home with the 1-1-1 record in the three-game away trip.
The Islanders will now regroup and look ahead to getting back home next weekend, hosting Northwestern State Friday and UIW Sunday at the Dugan Stadium. Three of their last five games in the regular season will be held at home before hosting the SLC Tournament Nov. 5-10.
