Track & Field Closes Weekend at Robert Platt Invitational

January 27, 2024

HOUSTON, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track & field team closed out the first half of the indoor season after day two at the Robert Platt Invitational, hosted by the University of Houston.

It was the final day of the two-day meet, where the Islanders rearranged yet another program top-10 list. From the meet, the Islanders had a total of five athletes break into a top-10 record for the program.

After running his personal record in the season opening meet for the mile, junior Logan Rickey set a new personal best again for the event with a 4:18.31 time, a six second improvement. His time gets him within the top-10 among conference members.

"I am extremely proud of all our athletes that set new personal records this weekend and who added a performance to the program's top-10 list," said head coach Bryan Jackson. "Logan was the performance of the weekend with a huge PR and a very well executed race."

In his first semester as an Islander, sophomore Emil Hajjaj ran a 1:55.49 in the 800m which was good enough for sixth all-time in the program. Sophomore Matthew Flores also found success in the 800m, setting his life-time best for the event with a 1:57.32 time.

Juniors Chloe Garcia Grafing and Kate Brockman both ran the 800m for the first time and beat out five Southland members at the meet. Grafing raced a 2:22.19 to rank fifth overall among the SLC while Brockman crossed at 2:24.62.

In the 200m, freshman Nia Hampton ran the event for the first time and crossed the line at 25.42s, just 0.02 seconds out of the program's top-10.

The weekend closed out with the 4x400 meter relay. For the women, the team of Garcia Grafing, Yasmine Steele, Riley Cowan, and Brockman won their heat with a 4:09.09 time.

"I don't want to take away from those performances, however, this weekend did not live up to the standard we have for what it means to apart of the Islanders Track and Field program. I expect this to be a learning experience and look forward to see how this team responds to my challenge to them," said Jackson.

The Islanders will have another two weeks off before heading back to the University of Houston on Feb. 9 to compete in the Howie Ryan Invite. It will be the third of four indoor meets for A&M-Corpus Christi ahead of the SLC Indoor Championships on Feb. 25-26.
