Islanders Set for SHSU Remax Prime Properties Bearkat Invitational

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Looking for improved success from last year, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program will play in the SHSU Remax Prime Properties Bearkat Invitational with an 8 a.m. shotgun start at Elkins Lake Country Club.

Last year at this tournament, the Islanders finished fourth out of 13 schools after carding its best score in the final round (297).

This year, A&M-Corpus Christi will be going against a familiar set of opponents with the field featuring Sam Houston, Stetson, Texas A&M-Commerce, Lamar, Tarleton State, UT-Arlington, Stephen F. Austin, McLennan CC, Texas Southern, and Texas A&M.

All seven members of the team will be competing. The Islanders will be represented by Lucie Charonnier, Lucia Ramirez, Samatha Gibbs, Elsa Tornvall, and Reese Drezins while Carla Puente Fernandez and Reagan Gray will play as individuals.

Rounds one and two will be played Monday with the final round set for Tuesday.

"The entire team will be playing at SHSU this week," said head coach Pat Stephens. "It will give everyone a chance to get their feet wet in competition this fall. We are playing Elkins Lake CC this year, so the team is excited to play this venue. It is a very good, manicured golf course that has many challenges."

In their first tournament of the season, the Islanders placed 11th out of 17 at the Missouri State Payne Stewart Meet where they tied the program's third lowest round with a 285 in round two. It marked the first time in program history that multiple student-athletes tallied scores in the 60s in the same round of the same tournament, with senior Lucie Charbonnier, sophomore Lucia Ramirez, and freshman Samantha Gibbs all carding a 69.

The three of them all placed in the top 50 out of 96 at the tournament, with Charbonnier finishing fourth individually after ending under par with a 214 (-2). Last year at SHSU, Charbonnier finished seventh overall after carding a 220.

"I feel the team is up for the challenge with a very good week of practice. The key for our team this week, and every week, is to get out of the box with a good score the first round. If we can do that, I believe a win is in the future for the Islanders Women's Golf team," said Stephens.
