LAKE CHARLES, La. – Gearing up for its second Southland Conference game of the season, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program will head to McNeese for a 7 p.m. game Friday at Cowgirl Field.
Â
The Islanders will experience their first road SLC game of the year but are not inexperienced away from home. It will be A&M-Corpus Christi's seventh road contest and is unbeaten in its last three. The last road game was a 3-1 victory over Tarleton State on Sept. 8.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi will look to shake off a hard fought 3-2 defeat to Texas A&M-Commerce in its conference opener last weekend. The Islanders garnered goals from sophomore
Mai-Lisa Atis and freshman
Aaliyah Ramadan.
Â
Atis leads the team with four goals and nine points on the season. She's one of nine Islanders to score this year along with senior
Maggie Murray with three goals. Junior
Kaitlynn Melton leads the squad with four assists including a program record three in a game in the victory at Tarleton.
Â
Senior
Jayden Rea and juniors
Rachel Loetzer and
Gracie Gill have started in all nine games. Junior
Emma Crump has logged a team-high 615 minutes as a center back.
Â
The Islanders have recently been splitting goalkeeping duties between senior
Kennedy Stelling and junior
Zoe Theriot. They each played 45 minutes in the last two games against UTRGV and A&M-Commerce with Theriot getting the start in each.
Â
Friday will be the conference opener for McNeese, which has non-conference wins over Alcorn State 6-0, Texas Southern 3-0 and Jackson State 2-1. Freshman Morgan Fiedler leads the team with five goals and an assist.
Â
It's the start of a three-game road trip for the Islanders as they'll continue on to HCU and UIW next weekend. The next home game is Friday, Oc. 6 when they host Southeastern at 7 p.m. at Dugan Stadium.
