CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A goal in the 78th minute by senior
Maggie Murray was the equalizer in a 1-1 tie against UTRGV on Thursday in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union at Dugan Stadium.
The Islanders dominated the second half where they outshot the Vaqueros 6-0 and held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. A&M-Corpus Christi outshot UTRGV 10-4 overall in the game.
Murray's goal came after a strong drive down the left by freshman
Cariana Pou, who earned the assist. Pou centered a pass that was tapped in by Murray on the goal line for the score. It was Murray's third goal of the season and 14th of her career, ranking her third all-time in program history.
The tie extended A&M-Corpus Christi's unbeaten streak to four games. The Islanders are also unbeaten at home with a 1-0-1 record.
"It's not the resulted we wanted and it's probably not the result we deserved. We played really well, especially in the second half. We never gave up, we got the equalizer and it looked like we were going to get the game-winner but we just ran out of time," said head coach
Craig Shaw. "We've got a tough opener [for conference Sunday] but we're at home and we're building more and more confidence, and getting better and better."
A&M-Corpus Christi outshot UTRGV in both games this year after holding an 8-4 advantage in Edinburg. Over the two games, the Islanders outshot the Vaqueros 18-8.
A&M-Corpus Christi's 10 shots came from eight different student-athletes Thursday including a pair from senior
Olivia Hughes and freshman
Aaliyah Ramadan. Junior
Rachel Loetzer, the reigning Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week winner, registered a shot and logged a team-high 86 minutes.
UTRGV's goal came in the 37th minute after a ball deflected high off the cross bar and landed perfectly next to an attacker for a touch into the lower left side.
A&M-Corpus Christi will begin conference play Sunday when it hosts Texas A&M-Commerce at 1 p.m. at Dugan Stadium.
