EDINBURG, Texas – In the first match-up of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program heads to UTRGV for a 6:30 p.m. game at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The South Texas Showdown is a 12-sport rivalry between A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV, and the Islanders lead the yearly series 5-2.
In soccer, the two squads have split meetings over the last two years. A&M-Corpus Christi won last year on the road 4-3 as goals were scored by senior

"This game always bring a level of passion and intensity usually only seen in conference matches," said head coach
Craig Shaw. It's a tough match against a very new looking and quality UTRGV team that always plays very well at their home field."
A&M-Corpus Christi opened the 2023 campaign with a 2-0 win Thursday over Texas Southern. The Islanders outshot the Tigers 24-6 including a 16-2 disparity in shots on goal. Junior
Megan Guy scored the go-ahead goal in the 62nd minute and sophomore Mai-Lisa Attis added an insurance tally 10 minutes later.
Senior
Kennedy Stelling registered a clean sheet in net and made a pair of saves in 90 minutes.
The Vaqueros fell 2-0 in their season opener Friday against Southeastern. UTRGV returned 11 student-athletes and brought in 16 newcomers under second year head coach Mark Foster.
Sunday will be the first of a six-match road swing for the Islanders. Their next home game is Thursday, Sept. 14 when they host UTRGV in a rematch at 7 p.m.
