Roxy Segura Hire

Softball Brings on Segura as Assistant Coach

August 18, 2023

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Bringing experience as both a Division I softball player and coach, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program announced the hiring of Roxsanna "Roxy" Segura as an Assistant Coach.

A Laredo, Texas native, Segura comes to the Island after her first stint as an assistant softball coach at Southern University where she also competed on the team from 2019-22. While in Louisiana, she assisted in networking and all aspects of the recruiting process as well as coordinating practice plans and skill development.

"I'm extremely excited to be an islander!" said Segura. "I look forward to sharing my knowledge of the game but also helping these young ladies succeed in all areas of what being a student athlete consists of. I was a student athlete myself not too long ago, and to now be on this side of the game at this level, in an Institution based in Texas, my home state, is incredible. Looking forward to getting to know these young ladies and having a common goal of making a run for that conference championship."

As a student-athlete, Segura competed at Trinity Valley Community College under current Islanders head coach Kathleen Rodriguez from 2017-19. While there, she was named the 2019 Outstanding Athlete of the Month and earned NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete honors after completing her associate degree in liberal arts with a 4.0 GPA.

Segura then transferred to Southern University in 2019 to compete at the Division I level and finish out her athletic career. Segura saw her batting average increase each year and finished her career starting 87 games, batting .247 and a slugging percentage of .325. In the field, she finished with a .907 fielding percentage on 289 chances. In the 2021 season she received preseason 1st team short stop and finished her last season in 2022 by earning the All-SWAC Tournament Team with a .500 batting average. She was also named Most Valuable Player and earned the Makeda Excellence Award in 2022.

"We are extremely excited to have Roxy join our coaching staff," said head coach Kathleen Rodriguez. "She brings a multitude of positives to our program. Her love for the game, her passion for family, academics, the game of softball, and the need and want to serve our community all make her a perfect fit for Islander Softball. We are lucky to have her as part of our TAMUCC family!"

Segura graduated from Southern University with a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies in 2021 before earning her master's in business administration in 2022 while playing out her last year of athletic eligibility.
