AUSTIN – Going up against the 15th-ranked team in the country, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program closed out its preseason schedule Saturday in a 6-0 decision versus Texas at the Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field.
Â
The Islanders fielded 23 different student-athletes who all logged at least 10 minutes. Grad transfer
Olivia Hughes played a team-high 80 minutes in the back.
Â
"Really proud of the team. We learned from our first half mistakes to play a really good second half. Only being outshot 16-8 versus the No. 15 team is great. Just unlucky for us they are unbelievably clinical," said head coach
Craig Shaw.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi fired eight shots from six different student-athletes. Juniors
Storm Harris and
Faith Adams recorded two apiece, while junior
Gracie Gill and freshman
Aaliyah Ramadan both put a shot on goal.
Â
The Islanders played a pair of goalkeepers an even 45 minutes and each made a couple of saves. Senior
Kennedy Stelling got the start, while junior
Zoe Theriot entered at the half.
Â
The Longhorns are coming off a 15-3-4 campaign including a 7-0-2 record in the SEC. They defeated Texas A&M in the NCAA Tournament before falling at No. 8 Duke.
Â
The regular season and home opener is slated for Thursday, Aug. 17 when the Islanders host Texas Southern at 7 p.m. at Dugan Stadium. The game can be watched on ESPN+ with Steven King on the call.
