CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Heavily aiding in the success of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Department of Athletics over the last three seasons, Drew Whelan was elevated to Director of Sports Performance, announced Wednesday.
Â
Whelan previously served as an assistant sports performance coach with the Islanders and played a large role in A&M-Corpus Christi winning eight championships as a department in 2022-23. He worked closely with baseball and a beach volleyball team that won two championships and their first NCAA Tournament victory in program history.
Â
"I would like to thank all of the Islanders athletics staff, coaches and student-athletes for their trust and providing me with this incredible opportunity. I'm very excited to uphold the standard of excellence and expand upon the success we've had," Whelan said.
Â
Whelan was instrumental in implementing strength and conditioning training, protocols and readiness. He structured lifting schedules and enhanced specific energy systems to ensure student-athlete health and performance. He also assisted with agility and change of direction training for several programs.
Â
"Drew has played a significant role in the success of Islanders Athletics and I'm thrilled for him to lead our sports performance department," said vice president for intercollegiate athletics Adrian Rodriguez. "Drew brings a wide array of experience with his military background and the culture he's helped create in the weight room has made a monumental impact on our championship mindset and competitive success for our student-athletes.
Â
Whelan began at A&M-Corpus Christi in June 2021 as a sports performance graduate intern. He previously spent about five years in the military as a Team Leader and Rifleman and was deployed to Paktika Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 12-13.
Â
Whelan graduated Summa Cum Laude from Texas Tech with a degree in sociology, and earned his Master's degree from A&M-Corpus Christi in kinesiology. He became Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified in June 2021.
Â
During his time in the military, Whelan earned the Combat Infantryman's Badge and the Expert Infantryman's Badge, along with multiple other awards and citations.
