CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Over 75 percent of student-athletes in the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Department of Athletics tallied a grade point average above 3.0 in the spring 2023 term.

It capped a massive year for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi academically after the institution won the Southland Conference Academic Performance Award for the second consecutive year. The Islanders submitted a 3.28 GPA as a department this spring.

It marked the 18th consecutive semester A&M-Corpus Christi recorded a cumulative GPA above 3.0. Additionally, commencements continue to grow as 59 student-athletes graduated in 2022-23.

"I am so proud of our Islanders student-athletes who always prove why they are so respected on campus and in the community. They excel in their sports, in the community, and in the classroom. Receiving the Academic Performance Award for the second straight year speaks to the incredible level of commitment toward academic excellence by our student-athletes and entire Islanders Athletic program," said vice president of intercollegiate athletics Adrian Rodriguez.

Of the 217 student-athletes on campus, 166 registered a GPA above 3.0 to earn Spring Athletic Director's Honor Roll. Furthermore, 57 student-athletes submitted a perfect 4.0 GPA, and 27 student-athletes maintain a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA.

A pair of programs turned in team GPA's above 3.9 including women's tennis with a 3.97 and golf with a 3.91.

"I continue to be amazed at the dedication of our student-athletes to their academic successes,"Â said director of center for athletic academic services Jennifer Baker. "This is a great group and they have created a culture with high academic standards."

With softball, baseball and track & field still to be announced, the Islanders have earned 24 SLC All-Academic honors including 20 on the First-Team. The Islanders totaled four SLC Student-Athletes of the Year honors from Faith Panhans (volleyball), Isaac Mushila (men's basketball), Lucie Charbonnier (golf) and Pascal Lorieul (men's tennis).

The Islanders also made a tremendous impact in the community with student-athletes completing over 2,800 hours of community service. It included volunteering at events like Conquer the Coast, Miracle League, Flags for Heroes, Driscoll Childrens Hospital, several beach cleanups, university events and visits ad elementary schools throughout the year.

Athletically, A&M-Corpus Christi completed a historic year which saw the department win a school record eight conference championships. The Islanders won the SLC Women's All-Sport Award for the second year in a row with 64.5 points from women's sports in the Commissioner's Cup standings.
