CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – After six seasons at the helm,
Brent Ericksen announced he is stepping down as Head Coach of the cross country and track & field programs at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi to pursue other opportunities.
Â
"First of all, I'd like to thank both Adrian Rodriguez and Eric Schultz. They are such great people, and it has been a pleasure working with them both. Six years ago, I took the baton from Shawn Flanagan, who started the program from scratch, and have worked hard to keep the program moving in the right direction. We've won two conference championships, finished runner-up twice and have placed higher in conference in each sport than ever before. We've broke and rebroke over 40 school records and sent 20 to the NCAA Outdoor Track Championships and four into the final round, with two earning All-American Status. In addition, three athletes have qualified for the NCAA National Championship meet in Cross Country," Ericksen said.
Â
In cross country, Ericksen coached the women to a pair of SLC Championships. The first came in 2018 when he coached Allyson Girard to the first-place crown as the Islanders recorded a total 6K time of 1:58.40. The second came in 2021 when four of the team's five scorers earned All-Conference nods and posted a 1:52.17 score.
Â
On the track, he coached 39 All-Conference honorees over the last two seasons and guided the men to a program-high finish at the 2022 SLC Indoor Championships with 109.5 points. It came after a 2021 campaign where he coached
Leonardo Ledgister to All-America honors after reaching the finals of the 400m hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with an Olympic qualifying time.
Â
In his first season in 2018, A&M-Corpus Christi broke 23 school records and notched a program record five qualifiers to NCAA Regionals.
Â
"Although I leave a proud Islander, I just felt the time is right for me to pass the baton to someone else. I can't wait to see what the next adventure has in store," Ericksen said.
Â
Ericksen was in his second stint with the Islanders. He previously served as associate head coach in 2007-08. Over the course of he's career, Ericksen has coached 143 All-Americans and 16 individual national champions.
Â
"We are proud of all of the great success Brent and his staff have enjoyed in cross country and track & field over the past six years at A&M-Corpus Christi. He has led our program to great accomplishment over that span, and so many All-Conference honorees and NCAA National Championship competitors have been the recipient of his great leadership and expertise. We are excited for Brent for his continued success into the future," said vice president of intercollegiate athletics Adrian Rodriguez.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi will open a national search for the next head coach.
