CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Senior
Gabriella Torres was honored on the Southland Conference's All-Academic First Team for her outstanding academic and athletic success, announced by the league office on Wednesday.
Torres is now a two-time All-Academic honoree after making the Second Team last season.
Torres, an All-Conference Second-Team selection, led the Islanders with a .330 batting average and .430 on-base percentage. Through 91 at-bats, she knocked 30 hits including three doubles and three long-balls. She was the only Islander to barrel at least 20 hits in conference play as she batted a .404 against Southland opponents. At catcher, she averaged a .971 fielding percentage with 181 putouts and 22 assists. She caught 12 runners stealing this year, seven of which were in SLC play.
In addition, Gabriella hoists a 3.69 cumulative GPA in her Biomedical Sciences degree along with a minor in Psychology. She earned All-Academic honors last year and has been named to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Dean's List four semesters.
"Gabriella was a leader in all aspects for our team," said head coach
Kathleen Rodriguez. "We are extremely proud of her effort both in the classroom as well as on the field."
The All-Academic teams are voted on by head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance staff members from each Southland Conference institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to qualify for All-Academic selection, and have competed in at least 50 percent of their team's contests on the season, excluding pitchers.
