CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Junior
Primrose Aholelei of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program was distinguished as an NFCA All-Region Third Team selection in the Central Region, announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Thursday.
Aholelei is the fifth Islander in program history to earn All-Region honors and second in the last two years. It is the first time since the 2010-11 seasons that A&M-Corpus Christi had back-to-back All-Region honorees.
She is recognized in the Central region alongside student-athletes from top-25 teams such as Baylor, Oklahoma, Texas, and Louisiana.
"This is another huge honor for Islanders softball," head coach
Kathleen Rodriguez said. "To see that Primrose was recognized alongside the top pitchers in the nation is both an honor and a tribute to her hard work and dedication to her craft, the program, the university, and the city of Corpus Christi. I am beyond proud!"
Aholelei, a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, was named the Southland's Pitcher and Newcomer of the Year after transferring in this season and emerging as A&M-Corpus Christi's ace. She is the first student-athlete in program history to be a recipient of both awards.
She led the conference in innings pitched (183.2), total strikeouts (159), batters struck out looking (43), and wins (18). In addition, she finished second in ERA at 1.83 and fourth in opposing batting average at .228. She was the first pitcher in the league to pitch at least 100 innings and second to record at least 100 strikeouts. She was 10-6 in SLC play for a 1.73 ERA.
The awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association's 10 regions with first, second and third-team selections. NFCA member head coaches from each respective region nominated student-athletes (eight maximum) and voted for the teams. All awarded student-athletes now become eligible for the 2023 NFCA Division I All-America squads.
