FORT WORTH, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball team split day one of its last tournament of the regular season, edging HCU 3-2 before falling to #1 TCU on Friday in the TCU Tournament.
The Islanders (19-9) completed the season-sweep over HCU (12-12) with the 3-2 match win in the teams' third meeting this year. A&M-Corpus Christi has now won 27 consecutive regular season matches against SLC opponents dating back to 2019.
The win over HCU gave the Islanders their sixth straight win before they fell to #1 TCU (26-0) 5-0. Seven of A&M-Corpus Christi's nine losses this year has been to nationally ranked opponents.
Opening the day strong was sophomore
Kela Moreno and redshirt junior
Shea Slusser who got the easy 21-13, 21-15 win over the Huskies. It was their 10
th straight win as a pair in the five spot.
Also taking down HCU in straight sets were courts two and three. Freshman
Kristin Bobay and graduate
Chloe Tome gave the Islanders a 2-1 lead in the match with a 21-15, 21-19 win before sophomore
Jade Bennett and junior
Tori Johnson clinched on court three after battling back for the three-set victory.
Facing the top team in the nation, Bobay/Tome garnered a set two win over TCU's twos to force a third but dropped the extra-set dual. Senior
Carissa Barnes and sophomore
Gloria Kostroun played in an exhibition match and won 23-21, 21-17 over the Horned Frogs.
The Islanders will conclude their regular season tomorrow with matches against FGCU and UTEP at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively. FGCU has been receiving votes in the AVCA Top-20 Poll.
