COMMERCE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team will make the trip to face Texas A&M-Commerce in a three-game conference series this weekend at the John Cain Family Softball Complex.
Friday will be played under the lights as the doubleheader is slated for a 5 p.m. pitch in game one while game three will close out the weekend on Saturday at noon. All three games can be watched on ESPN+.
Both teams will be going for their first conference series win this season. The Islanders (15-15, 3-6 SLC) have garnered a win in each of their three series, all coming in game three, including a 9-4 win over Nicholls last weekend. It allowed them to get back to a .500 pct on the season after not having possessed a losing record all year prior to the weekend with the Colonels.
A&M-Corpus Christi was able to do so after registering 12 hits on the day to average .429 at the plate as a team, it's best against an SLC opponent this year.
Junior
Primrose Aholelei threw the complete-game, her 14th this year, and only gave up two earned runs. Her three strikeouts on the day brought her season-total to 100, making her just the second pitcher in the Southland to record 100 strikeouts so far this year.
She has now pitched 122 innings, making her the first pitcher in the conference to surpass 100 innings pitched and to rank 17
th nationally.
The Islanders have three players in the Southland's top-ten, with Aholelei third in pitching, sophomore
Monee Montilla first in fielding, and junior
Sydney Hoyt sixth in fielding. Montilla is one of just three fielders in the conference to maintain a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
With six batters hitting above a .250, junior
Kimane Rogron leads the team with a .312 average, hits (29) and runs (11). She and fellow junior
Sidney Campion are the only two Islanders to have played in all 30 games this year.
A&M-Commerce (5-27, 1-8 SLC) has also registered a conference win over Nicholls, edging them 5-4 in extra innings. Kaydee Bennett leads the Lions with a .364 batting average which ranks her sixth in the league.
It will be the first time these two programs meet, with it being A&M-Commerce's first year at the Division I level and as a Southland Conference member.
