Softball Looks to Bring Momentum Home Against Lamar

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Coming off its first conference series win, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team will try to get the success rolling when it hosts Lamar in another three-game series matchup at Chapman Field Friday and Saturday.

A doubleheader will be played on Friday beginning at 12 p.m. Saturday will conclude the series with game three also set for a noon start. All three games will be streamed live on ESPN+.

The Islanders (18-15, 6-6 SLC) swept the series with A&M-Commerce last week to get back to a winning record. They also erased a losing conference record for the first time this season, now evened at 6-6 SLC.

Two of the three wins were shutouts for A&M-Corpus Christi, with junior Primrose Aholelei throwing both as complete games. Through the 14 scoreless innings, she kept the Lions to under four hits in both games and struck out 15 total on the weekend.

The Islanders now have five shutout victories on the year, with Aholelei pitching each one. She was the first pitcher in the SLC to pitch at least 100 innings this year and the second to strikeout at least 100 batters. She is now up to 134.0 IP and 115 strikeouts.

A&M-Corpus Christi scored 15 runs over the weekend, four of which came off the grand slam by senior Quinn De Avila in game one. It was her fourth home run of the season but first career grand slam.

It was one of four home runs by the Islanders, as junior Taniece Tyson, sophomore Rhea-Ann Avalos, and Hoyt each also hit one out of the park. A&M-Corpus Christi now has seven home runs in SLC play, the second most in the league.

The Islanders have three Islanders in the Southland's top-ten, with Aholelei third in pitching, sophomore Monee Montilla second in fielding, and junior Sydney Hoyt sixth in fielding. Montilla is one of just three fielders in the conference to maintain a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.

Aholelei leads the Southland in IP and wins (13), and ranks second in batters struck out, third in ERA (1.93), and sixth in opposing batting average (.230). Hoyt is second in saves (3) while sophomore Paolina Baez ranks fourth in walks (19) and junior Sidney Campion eighth in on-base percentage (.418).

Campion and junior Kimane Rogron are the only players to have started all 33 games this year. Rogron leads the team in batting average at .297.

Lamar (11-28, 4-8 SLC) also has one conference series win under its belt, beating Northwestern State in a rubber match to clinch it. The Cardinals are offensively paced by Sam Bean who records a .345 batting average, sixth in the conference.

Lamar leads A&M-Corpus Christi 13-7 in the all-time record. Though, the last time the two teams faced each other in a three-game conference series was in 2021 when the Islanders blanked Lamar 6-0, 11-0 (5), and 6-0.

It was the first time in program history that the Islanders shutout an SLC team over an entire three-game series since joining the league in 2007. The second time was last year when the Islanders zeroed HCU 1-0, 7-0, 2-0.
