FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team powered past Iowa State with an early five-run inning in the second to defeat the Power Five program 6-1 on Sunday in the weekend finale at Bogle Park.
It marks the first win over a Power Five for the Islanders (10-9) this season and first since they defeated Baylor 2-1 exactly one year ago on March 5 last season. Junior
Primrose Aholelei earned her first career win in the circle against a Power-Five after she threw the complete-game.
Junior
Taniece Tyson and sophomore
Paolina Baez each went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in at least one run. Tyson drove in two after she hit a solo home run in the third to give the Islanders their sixth and final run of the day.
Iowa State (7-12) was kept scoreless through three while A&M-Corpus Christi struck early for a lead that the Cyclones couldn't answer.
Junior
Quinn De Avila singled in the second to become the first base runner of the game. Freshman
Crystal Davila and Tyson followed with base hits of their own, as Tyson drove in De Avila from second to get the Islanders on the board.
With runners on first and second, junior
Alina Jasso drew the walk to make it bases-loaded with only one out. Baez and senior
Alexandria Torres each drove in another run to make it 3-0 before junior
Sidney Campion forced an Iowa State error to reach base and score Jasso and Baez for the 5-0 cushion.
Aholelei retired the first seven straight batters before Iowa State managed to reach base in the third, though, two strikeouts and a throw down from De Avila to Davila to catch the runner stealing ended the threat.
Tyson then added on to A&M-Corpus Christi's lead with a two-out solo home run over left field in the third.
The Cyclones didn't get on the scoreboard until the fourth off a solo home run of their own. Aholelei gave up two more hits, but she and the defense would not allow Iowa State to reach home again as they closed out the 6-1 victory.
Aholelei finished the weekend with a 2-1 record, only giving up four earned runs while striking out 18 through 20.1 innings of work.
The game marked A&M-Corpus Christi's final nonconference tournament this year. With a 10-9 record, the Islanders have not possessed a losing record yet this season.
Next up, the Islanders will return home to host Prairie View A&M in a midweek doubleheader on Tuesday. The first game is set for 1 p.m. with game two starting approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
