BOCA RATON, Fla. – Posting two 3-2 victories on Saturday, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball team defeated both Southern Miss and Saint Leo University to conclude its weekend in Florida at the FAU Beach Invitational.
The Islanders (5-4) is now on a three-match winning streak and improved to a winning record for the first time this season with the pair of wins on the day.
Jade Bennett and
Tori Johnson on flight three went undefeated, topping Southern Miss (6-3) and Saint Leo (4-4) both in straight sets to improve to 3-2 on the weekend.
On court five,
Kela Moreno and
Shea Slusser also went 2-0 on the day and was the clinching point in both matches. The duo opened with a 21-14 win in set one over Southern Miss before dropping the second set 19-21, though, won the 15-8 deciding final set to secure the win for the Islanders. They swept Saint Leo 21-18, 21-7 to again clinch A&M-Corpus Christi's third point.
Moreno and Slusser now hold a team-best 6-3 record on the season so far.
Courts one and four split the day.
Giuliana Poletti Corrales and
Kiley Lewis teamed on flight one and edged Southern Miss 2-1 while
Maria Duda Fernandes de Melo and
Hannah Doyle paired at court four to defeat Saint Leo 21-18 in both sets one and two.
The Islanders close out the weekend with the 3-1 record in the FAU Beach Invitational with the sole loss coming from #13 FAU. Three of A&M-Corpus Christi's four losses this season have come against top-20 programs.
Next up, the Islanders will compete in the Southland Mid-Year tournament to face four conference opponents. The tournament will be held at Third Coast Volleyball Club in Houston on March 11 and 12.
