A&M-Corpus Christi Prepares For Annual Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's track and field programs take to the road for the Texas Relays, a four-day event in which most events require an invite to compete, this Wednesday through Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

"It's not only Texas' biggest invitational, but you have teams from all across the country that come here,"  said head coach Brent Ericksen. "It's always a fun meet that's hard to get into so when you get in it, you know you're among the best in the state and hopefully regionally or nationally as well."

The Islanders have nine different student-athletes spread among ten events over the course of the meet. Among the group, five members of the distance team will travel joined by four within the sprinting group.

Senior Dennis Kipngeno is the highest-finishing returner among the group after placing seventh in the men's 5,000m last season at the meet with a mark of 14:02.87. Sophomore Kelvin Kimaiyo was shortly behind him in 12th, clocking in at 14:13.82. The formers bettered his all-time mark in the run at 14:00.98 two weeks later int he season, looking to match those times this season. Both are competing for the first time this outdoor season at the Relays.

Enock Kimutai, a junior, will join the aforementioned dup in the men's 5,000m run for his first appearance at the meet. He opened up the outdoor season with a 14:55.35 mark in the event to win the UTSA Invitational.

Graduate students Juan Salinas III and Quin Johnson both earned invites for the men's and women's 10,000m events, the first for Salinas and second for Johnson. Johnson returned to the track for the first time in a year at the UTSA Invitational where she won the women's 5,000, run with a mark of 17:48.94. She looks to better her time in the 10K from last year when she ran a 35:38.12 to place ninth.

Capri Wilson, a junior, competed at the Relays a year ago in the women's 4x100m relay, marking a time of 47.85 for 10th. This year, she looks to compete in the 100m dash alongside Zenai Fowler, a true freshman. Fowler set a season-best 12.26 time at the Clyde Hart Classic this past weekend while Wilson looks to open up her 2023 outdoor campaign.

Daniel Armstrong, a senior, and Ke'Tavion Humber, a graduate student, both set their sights on the 110m hurdles as both come off the Clyde Hart Classic, having placed fifth and third respectively in the event. Humber owns a season-best time of 14.16s as Armstrong sits at 14.44s. The latter will compete in the 400m hurdles as well, boasting a 52.83s mark in the event.

Each day of the Relays will be streamed on ESPN+ (LHN) with a subscription, starting at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, 10 a.m. Thursday, 9:35 a.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
