HAMMOND, Louisiana – Heading into its second week of conference play, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team will take on Southeastern in a three-game series on Friday and Saturday at North Oak Park.
Friday will feature a doubleheader for the teams, beginning with a 12 p.m. first pitch. Game three is also set for 12 p.m. on Saturday.
The Islanders (13-11, 1-2 SLC) dropped its conference opening series to HCU but escaped with a win in game three. Off seven hits, A&M-Corpus Christi was able to plate five runs, four of which came in the third, to garner the 5-4 final advantage.
Sophomore
Paolina Baez recorded her third multi-hit game of the season after going 2-for-3 at the plate in game three. She is on a five-game streak of reaching base and is now ranked second in the conference in on-base percentage with a .467 mark.
Junior
Primrose Aholelei threw for 4.1 innings in which she only gave up two earned runs to be credited with her ninth win of the season. Junior
Sydney Hoyt relieved her in the fifth and pitched the final eight outs for the save, her third of the year. The three saves rank her eighth in the nation.
Aholehei leads the Southland in innings pitched at 94.0, with four of her last five appearances being complete-games. She ranks second in batters struck out (78) but first in batters struck out looking at 24.
Juniors
Sidney Campion and
Kimane Rogron are tied for the team lead of batting average at .306, most runs on the team at nine, and are only two players that have started all 24 games this year.
With a 13-11 overall record, the Islanders have not possessed a losing record yet this year. The program has not had a winning season since 2011 when the team concluded with a 41-16 overall record.
Southeastern (23-7, 2-1 SLC) earned the series win over Lamar over opening weekend of conference play, defeating the Cardinals 6-2 and 14-7 in games one and two. The Lady Lions were predicted to finish second in the SLC Preseason Poll.
Southeastern leads A&M-Corpus Christi 20-17 all-time and 11-6 when the teams play in Hammond. However, the Islanders edged the Lady Lions 2-1 for the season series win last year. Game one featured a 7-0 shutout for the Islanders to take the 1-0 advantage in the series before Southeastern evened it 1-1 after winning game two 6-2 in the doubleheader. In the rubber match, the Islanders walked it off 7-6 to clinch the series.
