CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi athletic department saw its student-athletes help out on campus with the Be The Match, Get In The Game Community Service Event on Thursday.
Â
The event marked the first time the two groups have partnered together as they hope to raise more awareness and add more students to their registry to help those in need. Coming into the day, the group set 200 registrants as their goal and exceeded the mark.
Â
"On behalf of Be The Match, we would like to thank the athletic department at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for supporting our blood cancer patients and their families. This is the first-ever Get In The Game event in South Texas and our local university here in Corpus Christi is helping us give hope to those in need," said Leticia M. Mondragon, an account manager at South and Central Texas.
Â
Be The Match boasts the most diverse registry in the nation and largest in the world, helping blood cancer patients to find matches. They note 70% of all patients who have recently been diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, or other forms of cancer need to find a match outside of their family.
Â
"I was very excited about coordinating this event and getting the Islander Athletes involved. I hope that our students understand that their personal health and wellness is a gift that can benefit others. Signing up to be a donor is one way of sharing that gift. There are many volunteer events on campus. This one is unique in that it could save a life," said Irma-Laura Davila, a scholastic and community service coordinator at A&M-Corpus Christi.
Â
Be The Match offers multiple services including counseling and one-on-one support, support groups, and caregiver support among other areas of help.
