A&M-Corpus Christi Defeats Arizona Christian, Southern Miss in Weekend Finale

TUCSON, Ariz. – Closing out a 4-2 weekend, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball team swept Arizona Christian and completed the season sweep in a 4-1 rematch over Southern Miss to conclude its stint in Arizona this weekend.

Coming off its first win over a top-20 opponent, the Islanders (13-6) kept the momentum going and went undefeated on their final day in the Arizona Invitational after taking down Arizona Christian (7-9) in straight sets before topping Southern Miss (9-8) for the second time this season.

Without letting a single pair score more than 13 points against them, the Islanders easily took down Arizona Christian on each court in straight sets to start the day. A&M-Corpus Christi improved to 2-0 all-time over the Firestorm after sweeping them last year in a 5-0 decision as well.

In the second match of the day, courts four and five quickly got their second straight-set wins of the day. Freshman Jordan Raven and sophomore Kela Moreno earned A&M-Corpus Christi its first point of the match with a 21-9 and 21-13 victory.

Freshman Maria Duda Fernandes de Melo and junior Hannah Doyle then gave the Islanders a 2-0 advantage against the Golden Eagles with a 21-16, 21-17 decision at flight four.

Southern Miss's twos fought for a point, but senior Giuliana Poletti Corrales and graduate Kiley Lewis gritted out a 21-12, 20-22, and 16-14 clinch point for the match victory.

Sophomore Jade Bennett and junior Tori Johnson went undefeated on the day, securing a quick 21-18, 21-9 victory over Arizona Christian before outlasting Southern Miss 22-20, 24-26, 16-14 for the Islanders' fourth point of the match.

The Islanders are now a perfect 4-0 against Southern Miss in the all-time record. They defeated the Golden Eagles 4-1 for the second time and first since 2021 in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

A&M-Corpus Christi will next head across the state line to compete in the Tiger Beach Challenge next Saturday and Sunday. The Islanders will face two more ranked opponents in the hosts of #6 LSU and #12 Washington. They will also conclude the conference schedule with a match against New Orleans, as the Islanders will be looking for the undefeated record in SLC play this year.
