A&M-Corpus Christi Earns Two Gold Medals at UTSA Invitational

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi earned two gold medals at the UTSA Invitational as both the men's and women's teams fell to UTRGV in the South Texas Showdown presented by Rally Credit Union.

"The team really competed well this weekend," praised head coach Brent Ericksen. "The conditions were awful with wind, rain, and temperatures in the 40s today. The marks and times won't reflect it, but I'm really happy with those who stepped up and got it done. These are the days that pay off when we get back to normal Texas weather."

Quin Johnson ran her way to the first gold medal of the meet for the Islanders in the women's 5,000m run with a 17:48.94 time as a graduate student. She was the lone member of the team to compete in the event and beat second place by just over five seconds.

Junior Enock Kimutai placed atop the podium once more for the blue and green, crossing the finish line first in the men's 5,000m run, crossing with a mark of 14:55.35, over 13 seconds ahead of the next. runner. Graduate student Juan Salinas III came in with a fifth-place time of 15:24.29.

Tranasia Jones walked away from the women's 400m dash with a silver medal, finishing behind first place by 0.48 seconds with a time of 56.90. Freshman Khiah Lara-Turner came in behind Jones in fifth place at 59.16 seconds.

Fatih Bett, a graduate student, and Riley Cowan, a senior, finished back-to-back in the women's 800m run in fourth and fifth with times of 2:19.56 and 2:22.23.

Daniel Armstrong, a senior, put up a strong performance in the men's 110m hurdles, earning a bronze medal at 14.79s fighting against the wind. He followed the performance with a second-place time in the men's 400m hurdles with 55.00s even.

Graduate Student Sean Majors jumped a mark of 7.01m in the men's long jump to tie the seventh-best mark in program history.

Despite the strong performances, the women lost in the South Texas Showdown 82-42 as the men lost 66-47. The Showdown is a competition between both schools where each sport competes head-to-head for the right to hold the trophy at the end of the year.

Next up for A&M-Corpus Christi is the Clyde Hart Classic hosted by Baylor in Waco, Texas this upcoming weekend, March 24-25.
