Beach Volleyball Improves to 5-0 SLC with Wins over SJSU & Nicholls

HOUSTON, Texas – Following a perfect weekend in the Southland Midyear tournament, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball team topped San Jose State 4-1 and Nicholls 5-0 to improve to 5-0 in league play.

The Islanders (9-4, 5-0 SLC) have now won 24 consecutive regular season matches against SLC opponents dating back to 2019. In addition to the four wins this weekend, the Islanders posted a 5-0 sweep over HCU in the conference opener earlier this year to hold a 5-0 SLC record.

Flight one of senior Giuliana Poletti Corrales and graduate Kiley Lewis went 2-0 on the day and 4-0 over the weekend. They battled back after dropping set one to San Jose State (5-4) to take the match 14-21, 21-8 and 15-9. The duo then cruised to a straight-set victory over Nicholls (2-11) 21-6 and 21-12.

Freshman Maria Duda Fernandes de Melo and sophomore Hannah Doyle also dropped set one to the Trojans but ultimately won with 21-16 and 15-6 wins in sets two and three, respectively, on court four. The pair moved to court three in the second match of the day where they swept Nicholls 21-7, 21-6. Graduate Ashlyn Power and junior Shea Slusser also garnered a win over Nicholls with a 21-7 and 21-13 win at flight five.

The new pair of freshman Raven Jordan and sophomore Kela Moreno also went 4-0 on the weekend, taking down each team in straight sets. They paired on court five in match one and moved to court four in match two of the day for the victories.

Moreno holds the team-best 10-3 record this year. She is 9-3 on court five and 1-0 on court four. Corrales and Lewis are 9-4 this year all at court one.

The results from this weekend will go towards determining seeding for the SLC Championships, hosted by the Islanders on April 21-23. A&M-Corpus Christi holds a league-best SLC record and will play one more regular season conference match against New Orleans on March 26.

Before then, the Islanders will return to the sand on March 16 for a doubleheader matchup against #6 Grand Canyon and UC Davis beginning at 12 p.m. CT.
