Softball Welcomes UTSA in Home Opener

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team is set to play in its 2023 home opener against UTSA on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. pitch at Chapman Field.

The Islanders (7-6) are coming off a challenging weekend in the Bayou, where they faced nationally touted #14 LSU and a tough UL-Lafayette team. Though, A&M-Corpus Christi maintains a winning record after jumping out to a 7-2 start this season, the program's best start since 2005.

A part of that win stretch was the first matchup of the season with UTSA (3-13), with the Islanders defeating the Roadrunners 6-4 on their turf.

In the previous meeting, the Islanders held a 2-1 edge through six innings before senior Gabriella Torres nailed one over left field for the home run and 6-1 advantage after the top of the seventh.

UTSA threatened A&M-Corpus Christi's lead in the bottom frame, but with bases-loaded and two outs, freshman Ariella Saenz headed to the circle in relief and only threw three pitches before retiring the batter for the final out to secure the 6-4 win for the Islanders.

Six different Islanders registered hits in each series with LSU and ULL. In the circle, junior Primrose Aholelei put in 15.0 innings of work over the weekend, including throwing two complete games. She struck out five batters and maintains a 2.46 ERA after the weekend, a team best.

Senior Quinn De Avila turns in the highest batting mark with a .426. Though, junior Kimane Rogron records a team-high 15 hits for a .349 average.

A&M-Corpus Christi has won eight of the last 10 meetings with UTSA, though, the Roadrunners lead the all-time record 35-25. The teams are tied 16-16 when they play in Corpus Christi.

The Islanders will be looking to win their home opener for the third year in a row. The game can be watched live with a subscription to ESPN+.
