HOUSTON, Texas – After dropping a close 3-2 decision against UAB in the morning, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball team rallied for a 5-0 sweep over Central Arkansas in the afternoon to split opening day.
With the straight-set victory over Central Arkansas, the Islanders improved to a winning 4-3 record over the Bears.
The Islanders garnered a pair of undefeated matches on courts one and five on the day.
On court one, the upperclassmen duo of
Giuliana Poletti Corrales and
Kiley Lewis won both their matches on the day. Despite going down 21-11 in the opening set, the pair came back to beat UAB's top pair 21-15 and 15-13. They posted a 21-16, 21-12 win in game two.
Court five saw the returned pairing of junior
Shea Slusser and sophomore
Kela Moreno who did not drop a set on the day. They quickly defeated UAB 21-14, 21-8 before equally dominating Central Arkansas 21-6, 21-11.
Hannah Doyle and Maria Duda Fernandes de Melo grinded out a 21-12 set two win against UAB, but ultimately dropped the match. Though, they regrouped and pulled out a 21-18, 21-14 win on court four against the Bears.
Courts two and three also garnered two-set wins over Central Arkansas, with
Jade Bennett and
Tori Johnson clinching the match before
Kristin Bobay and
Chloe Tome closed out the sweep.
Both matches featured an exhibition match, which will not count towards the season.
Elizabeth Cortez and
Ashlyn Power teamed up for a 21-17, 21-14 decision over UAB before the duo of
Avery Carroll and
Raven Jordan defeated Central Arkansas 21-12, 21-15.
The Islanders will play two more matches on Sunday against #3 TCU at 10 a.m. and HCU at 4 p.m.
