SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team will look to continue its opening weekend success when it competes in the I-35 Tournament split between San Marcos and San Antonio over the weekend.
The Islanders (3-2) will head to San Marcos to take on New Mexico State on Friday at 12 p.m. The rest of the tournament will be based in San Antonio for A&M-Corpus Christi, who will face NMST again on Saturday at noon before taking on the hosts of UTSA that day at 5 p.m. For the second weekend in a row, the Islanders will conclude against Abilene Christian on Sunday at 10 a.m.
The game against UTSA can be streamed live on C-USA tv.
The Islanders are coming off their best opening day since 2005 after the 2-0 start with wins over Murray State and Abilene Christian. They went 3-2 over opening weekend at the Wildcat Invitational where they outscored the opposition 25-18.
The season opener was a 1-0 shutout over Murray State where junior
Primrose Aholelei threw the complete-game shutout while striking out 10 batters and only allowing one hit. She saw action in four of the five games over the weekend and submitted a 2-2 record with a 2.14 ERA.
Junior
Sydney Hoyt returned to the circle for the first time since a shortened 2020 season and picked up two saves which ties her for first in the nation following opening weekend. She now averages a 1.75 ERA.
Senior
Gabriella Torres hit two home runs over the weekend, including a three-run homer on opening day against ACU. Fellow senior
Quinn De Avila also hit a home run, her career-first as an Islander.
Five Islanders recorded at least five hits over the weekend, including junior
Kimane Rogron who ended with eight, two of which were doubles. She hit for a .444 mark, only behind junior
Sidney Campion who turned in a .500 batting average after going 7-for-14 at the plate.
A total of seven doubles were hit by the Islanders over opening weekend, which was the most by a team in the Southland Conference. A&M-Corpus Christi also recorded the best fielding percentage in the league over the weekend with a .978 mark.
The Islanders went 2-0 against the ACU last weekend in the Wildcats' home tournament including in an 11-3 run-rule victory, though, ACU continues to lead the all-time record 18-6.
UTSA leads A&M-Corpus Christi 35-24 all-time. The Islanders last beat the Roadrunners in 2021 in Corpus Christi when they won in five innings after run-ruling them 8-0. New Mexico State leads the Islanders 6-5 in the all-time record but it will be the first meeting between the teams since 2014 when the Islanders won 5-0.
This will be the second of three consecutive tournament weekends before the Islanders have their home opener on Feb. 28 in a rematch with UTSA.
