CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will host UTRGV in back-to-back days this week at the American Bank Center as the women's basketball program tips off the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union at 7 p.m. Tuesday, followed by the men at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
The match-ups will include celebratory pre-games as the programs unveil their championship banners. The women will drop their 2022-23 Southland Conference Regular Season Championship banner as well as their 2023 WNIT banner. The men will drop their 2022-23 Regular Season Championship, 2022-23 SLC Tournament Championship and 2023 NCAA Tournament banners.
Furthermore, A&M-Corpus Christi announced $1 tickets to each game. For tickets call 361-825-BALL (2255) or visit the American Bank Center ticket windows.
Both games will be part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union. The showdown is a 12-sport competition between A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV with the yearly champion holding the annual trophy. The competition is in its eighth year with the Islanders leading the all-time institutional series 5-2.
In addition to athletic points being earned with each victory in the series, attendance points are awarded in volleyball, men's basketball, women's basketball and baseball. The school with the higher attendance in their respective home game in each sport will earn one valuable attendance point.
Women's basketball is 27-17 all-time against UTRGV and 15-7 at home. The two teams have split meetings in each of the last two years, both winning at home.
The men are 17-12 all-time against UTRGV and 9-6 at home. A&M-Corpus Christi has won three of the last four games in the series including home victories in back-to-back years.
