Las Cruces, N.M. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program will travel west to compete in the three-day New Mexico State Iconic Classic Monday through Wednesday at the NMSU Golf Course.
The teams will play 18 holes with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. MT (9:30 a.m. CT) all three days.
A&M-Corpus Christi will be one of 16 competing, alongside New Mexico State, Boise State, Boston College, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Long Beach State, Middle Tennessee, Nevada, Northern Arizona, San Francisco, Southern Utah, UC Davis, UT Arlington, UTEP, and UTRGV.
The Islanders are one of seven returning programs after playing in the tournament last fall. The team will send senior
Lucie Charbonnier, sophomore
Lucia Ramirez, sophomore
Elsa Tornvall, freshman
Samantha Gibbs, and junior
Reagan Gray.
"The team has always looked forward to playing the NMSU tournament," said head coach
Pat Stephens. "There will be a good field of teams and an opportunity to play against some higher ranked teams. We have three players who have played the course before, with Lucie having had a very good tournament last year where she finished fourth."
Last year at the NMSU tournament, Charbonnier tied the school record for best tournament with a 213 (-3) after carding a career-best 68 round. She has shot in the 60s again this fall with a 69 in round two of the MSU Stewart Payne Memorial.
A&M-Corpus Christi is coming off a sixth place showing at the SHSU Bearkat Invitational which was shortened to 36 holes due to weather conditions. Charbonnier finished ninth individually to place in the top-10 in both fall tournaments.
Three Islanders have turned in a round in the 60s, with Ramirez and Gibbs both carding a 69 in the same round as Charbonnier at the MSU Stewart Payne Memorial Meet. It was the first time in program history that three players shot in the 60s in the same round.
