Islanders Look to Continue Winning Ways on Road at A&M-Commerce, Northwestern State

COMMERCE, Texas – Coming off an unbeaten weekend where it didn't concede a goal, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program will look to keep rolling when it hits the road for games at Texas A&M-Commerce and Northwestern State.

A&M-Corpus Christi will kick it off with a 7 p.m. game against A&M-Commerce on Friday at the Lion Soccer Field. The Islanders will finish the weekend with a 1 p.m. start against Northwestern State on Sunday at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.

A&M-Corpus Christi will look to hand A&M-Commerce its first loss of the conference season as the Lions enter play with a 5-0 SLC record. The Islanders sit in fourth with a 3-2-1 mark and the Lady Demons are in a four-way tie for fifth at 2-4.

"This is a huge and difficult weekend against two programs who are having great success," said head coach Craig Shaw. "I'm just excited to see my ladies come together and fight for each other once again,"

Friday will be a rematch between the Islanders and the Lions. A&M-Commerce is one of two teams that A&M-Corpus Christi will see twice in the regular season along with McNeese. In the first meeting, the Lions squeaked out a 3-2 decision on Sept. 18 after a goal in the 87th minute. Sophomore Mai-Lisa Atis and freshman Ashley Wilson scored for the Islanders.

A&M-Corpus Christi is coming off a big weekend where it blanked Southeastern 1-0 and Nicholls 2-0. The Islanders garnered goals from junior Rachel Loetzer, junior Storm Harris and senior Molly Arens.

Loetzer went on to win Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors, her second of the season. It was the first time since 2019 that the Islanders turned in consecutive shutout wins in conference.

Offensively, the Islanders have registered 11 different goal scorers with Atis leading the way with four. Loezter, junior Megan Guy and senior Maggie Murray have all scored three apiece.

The Islanders will look to stop A&M-Commerce's Hannah Bell who leads the league with eight goals. On the other side of the field on Sunday, A&M-Corpus Christi will look to score against Northwestern State's Libe Banuelos who ranks first in the SLC with 66 saves in net.

This weekend will be the final road games of the season. A&M-Corpus Christi will host the Southland Conference Championship on Nov. 1-5 at Dugan Stadium.
