Track & Field Heads North To Texas Tech Open and Multis

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Coming off back-to-back weekends in Houston, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's track and field program is traveling to Lubbock, Texas to the Texas Tech Open and Multis at the Sports Performance Center. The meet will take place over four days, starting on Thursday and going through Sunday with the Islanders competing on Friday and Saturday.

"Overall I thought this past weekend we were much better," said head coach Brent Ericksen. "We had some kids who had never run indoor track before and had some first meet jitters and we stepped up and we'll have to step up even more this time."

Sophomore Kelvin Kimaiyo earned the Islanders' first gold medal of the season at the Robert Platt Invitational in the men's 3,000m run with a time of 8:30.74. His time sits atop the Southland with 25 other student-athletes competing in the event.

The team has combined to set five top-10 records thus far in the season. Sophomore Jamal Dawson and junior Jaiyah Hodge each set records in the high jump with marks of 2.00m and 1.55m respectively. Graduate Student Faith Bett and senior Riley Cowan each put down marks in the women's 800m dash with the times holding up as the third and fourth-fastest in the conference.

Dawson's mark in the men's high jump not only moved him up the school's all-time record board but was a new personal best. Senior Spencer Bigner earned eighth all-time in the high jump at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invite where he cleared 1.95m.

Other schools slated to make an appearance include Power Five opponents Oregon, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Auburn, Ohio State and Texas among numerous others. Houston Christian University is the only Southland opponent making the trek with the Islanders.

Both days are available to be streamed on ESPN+ with Friday and Saturday beginning at 3:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m. respectively.

Notes
- Senior Trpimir Siroki came four centimeters short of breaking his own school record at the Robert Platt Invitational in the long jump.

- Kimaiyo's victory was the first appearance he has made for the Islanders in nearly a year, marking a huge gain for the team.

- Junior Capri Wilson's time in the 60m at the Robert Platt Invitational was 0.1s away from tying her best mark in the event.
