CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Coming off three consecutive victories, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team looks to extend the streak to four on the road against Texas A&M-Commerce at Lion Soccer Field Friday night at 7:00 p.m. After facing the Lions, the Islanders will return home to play host to UIW Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer and Track Stadium.
Â
"We're going to take Texas A&M-Commerce as seriously as we take anybody," said head coach
Craig Shaw. "Their coach has done a great job with them and they're a great program and winning games."
Â
The Islanders will kick off the weekend by facing Texas A&M-Commerce for the first time in program history. The Lions made the transition to the Division I level this season and joined the Southland Conference, sitting 2-2 in conference play.
Â
After taking on the Lions, A&M-Corpus Christi will travel back home to host UIW in the second matchup between the two teams this season. The Islanders claimed the first match 4-1 against the Cardinals, seeing sophomore
Megan Guy take off for the first three goals of the game. Freshman
Mai-Lisa Atis scored the fourth and final goal off of a penalty kick.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi is coming off a victory over Nicholls in which they broke the program's single-season scoring record, reaching 25 on the season in the 3-1 victory. It helped the team to also break the record for most points in a season at 74, shattering the old record of 66. The mark is atop the conference, leading second-place Lamar by nine points. The team currently sits 14th in the nation in scoring offense for Division I women's soccer, averaging 2.78 goals per game.
"It's great for the forwards," continued Shaw, talking about the high-scoring offense of the team. "Most of them are sophomores and we knew we had talent and it just had to develop and grow. They've got so much further to go as well so that's what I'm excited about."
Continuing to build on the record-setting season, the Islanders also broke the single-season assist record with their 24th assist coming during the last contest. The assist mark is another area in which A&M-Corpus Christi leads, ahead of Lamar by three assists.
Â
The defense has done well, only allowing one goal per match in the last four performances. Sophomore
Emma Crump won SLC Defensive Player of the Week in week five for the Islanders, fighting with the team to set a new record in the least goals allowed in a season. The team has allowed 12 goals throughout nine games and are aiming to stay below the current record of 22, set twice in program history.
Both games will be streamed on ESPN+ and have live stats available.
