Golf Sits Middle of Pack after Day One of Missouri State Payne Stewart Meet

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program improved from round one to round two to sit in eighth-place out of 15 schools Monday at the Missouri State Payne Stewart Meet at Rivercut Golf Course.
 
The Islanders carded a 306 in round one and followed it up with a 302 in round two for a 608 (+32) score. A&M-Corpus Christi is 18 strokes out of first-place and one stroke behind South Dakota to move up to seventh.
 
"Not the rounds we wanted to start the fall season out with. Many unforced and careless mistakes made by each team member during their rounds. However, the team also showed signs of what they are capable of throughout both rounds," said head coach Pat Stephens.
 
Freshman Lucia Ramirez led the way with a 150 (+6) to stand in 19th individually in her collegiate debut. She was followed by senior Maria Beltran and fellow freshman Elsa Tornvall who were just two strokes behind with a 152 (+8) each.
 
"I'm very pleased with the play of our two freshmen, Lucia and Elsa. Both showed a lot of poise for their first collegiate event," Stephens said.
 
Juniors Reese Drezins and Lucie Charbonnier rounded it out for the Islanders. Drezins turned in a 156 (+12), while Charbonnier submitted a 157 (+13).
 
"The team is determined and will definitely make some 'Islander' waves tomorrow. Look for this bunch to shoot lights out in the final round," Stephens said.
 
The final 18 holes will begin at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
