CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Rolling off a season-opening win, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer will travel to Edinburg to play UTRGV in the South Texas Showdown presented by NavyArmy Credit Union. The game kicks off at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex in the first of two matchups between the teams this season.
"We love the South Texas Showdown," said head coach
Craig Shaw. "It's a fun rivalry outside of the conference and we always want to do our best for the athletic department so we can keep that trophy in Corpus Christi. Against Texas Southern, I saw moments of what we can be as a program this fall and it excites me. We have to bring that energy and passion against UTRGV as well."
The Islanders are coming off a 3-1 victory over Texas Southern on the road after withstanding a grueling two-and-a-half-hour lightning delay on Friday. Three different players scored within the match as junior
Molly Arens led the way in the first five minutes of the game, followed by sophomore
Morgan Westbury and junior
Reese Cross.
Westbury took an aggressive approach on the goal, going in for seven shots with the one going in the net. Arens shot the ball four times with three being on target and one making its way past the goalkeeper.
Last season, the two teams each earned a victory on their home turf, helping lead the Islanders to an overall victory in the South Texas Showdown in the spring. UTRGV and A&M-Corpus Christi contend for the title each year, decided by the culmination of points from all sports' head-to-head competitions.
The matchup will be streamed on ESPN+ and will have live stats that can be followed throughout the game.
