Soccer Preps for Season Opener at Texas Southern

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team will travel to Houston for its season-opener against Texas Southern at Durley Stadium Thursday evening at 7:00 pm.

"We want to use the nerves in a positive way," head coach Craig Shaw said about preparing for the season-opener. "We'll be ourselves and if we play our game style with passion and energy, we will beat anyone."

The Islanders return to the field for the first time since playing Tarleton State in an exhibition match at home last Friday, giving the team an opportunity to gain extra experience on the field. All three goalkeepers played on the field as well to distribute minutes.

Maggie Murray, a junior, took one of the team's three shots on goal to pave the way for the Islanders. Rachel Loetzer, a sophomore transfer, took another shot on goal with the final one coming from sophomore Megan Guy. The collective team took six shots during the hard-fought matchup.

Murray was one of three Islanders named to the Southland Preseason All-Conference Second Team along with sophomore Emma Crump and grad student Reaghan Lang who returns for her final season on the Island.

Shaw praised both his assistant coaches when talking about preparation for the game, saying, "Hunter Nail and Nicole Randall have done a great job preparing the team this week and I believe the team will be more than ready for tomorrow."

When the teams met up last year at the Dr. Jack Dugan Track & Soccer Stadium, A&M-Corpus Christi walked away with a massive 5-0 victory to boost the Islanders. Returners Guy and Lang each scored a goal in the match.

The game will be the first regular-season game for both teams, kicking off at 7:00 p.m.
