BREVILLE-SUR-MER, France - Sophomore
Lucie Charbonnier of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf team returned to her home country to extend her successful year of strong play, making it to the final match of the French Amateur this week for a runner-up finish at the Granville Golf Club.
The 27-hole golf course featured a field of 64 individuals who began with two rounds of stroke play to qualify for match play. The par 71, 6,380 yard course is the only true links course in France.
The Peron, France native and All-Southland Second Team selection shot a 71 and 72 in the qualifying stroke play portion of the tournament to qualify for the match play portion. Charbonnier was seeded ninth entering match play.
In the first round, Charbonnier finished five holes ahead of her opponent after 14 holes, advancing her to the next round of match play. In the elite eight, Charbonnier beat her opposite with a 1-up score to advance to the quarterfinals.
Charbonnier defeated her next two opponents with a 3 and 2 and then a score of 2-up to make it all the way to the championship match, falling just short for the runner-up finish.
"Lucie enjoys match play events, so I wasn't surprised that she played well," said A&M-Corpus Christi's head coach
Pat Stephens. "I am looking forward to seeing what the remainder of the summer has in store for her."
Charbonnier recently finished her sophomore year campaign on the Island, finishing in the top-10 individually in five of the six spring tournaments, including her first career win at the PGA Works Collegiate Championship to help the Islanders secure the tournament win for the second year in a row.
She will continue competing through the summer with her next event being the Grand Prix Chiberta and Biarritz Cup, located in Biarritz, France.
