UIW Barely Avoids Islanders Sweep in Regular Season Finale

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - In a fight to the last inning, UIW edged out the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball 3-2 in the regular season finale at H-E-B Field on Saturday.

The Islanders (23-25, 11-7) took the series after winning games one and two despite the loss in game three. The two wins secured the No. 3 seed for A&M-Corpus Christi in the Southland Conference tournament next week.

UIW (15-34, 5-13) struck first for its first lead of the series, scoring two in the bottom of the third. Junior Ashleigh Sgambelluri got the Islanders on the board in the fourth with a solo home run to left field, her second home run of the series. Leading 2-1, the Cardinals responded with a home run of their own in the fifth to go up 3-1.

A single by sophomore Gabriella Torres scores sophomore Sydney Hoyt for A&M-Corpus Christi's second run of the game in the sixth, taking the game to only a run-one difference.

Down 3-2 in the top of the seventh, junior Pal Egan hit a single through the right side with two outs on the board. Hoyt followed her up with a single herself, sending Egan to try for home, but Egan was thrown out at home to end the game and give the Cardinals their first win of the series.

Sgambelluri led the team in game three, going 2-for-3 at the plate while also tacking on an RBI and a run. Hoyt also turned in a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 and scoring a run herself.

Egan ends the regular season with a 25-game streak of reaching base. She also has surpassed the single-season record for batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage as well as breaking the bases stolen record with 27, previously set at 22.

The team's total win count of the regular season was 23, making this the winningest season since 2015.

The Southland Conference tournament will be hosted by Southeastern in Hammond, Louisiana. Play will begin on May 10th and go through May 13th until a winner is crowned. This will be the first tournament appearance for the Islanders since 2015.
