Softball Gears Up For Conference Series Against the Demons

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Week three of conference play will have the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team facing Northwestern State in a three-game home series at Chapman Field this weekend.

A&M-Corpus Christi (12-21, 0-3) will take on the Demons (23-13, 5-1) in a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 1 p.m. with the final game of the series set for 12 p.m. on Saturday. All three games can be watched on the Islanders Digital Network.

This will be the first meeting between the teams since 2019 and first on the Island since 2017. The teams were scheduled to meet at Chapman Field during the COVID-shortened 2020 season.

The Islanders had their bye-week last weekend after facing McNeese in week one of conference play. Senior Grace Gilbert pitched a complete game through the 10-inning series opener, a game-high not just on the team, but for the entire conference. Freshman Denay Smith has also thrown three complete games this season including one against Baylor where she earned the 2-1 win. Both pitchers are tied with three wins.

Gilbert has pitched three complete games this season with wins in two of them, most notably in the 3-2 win over Syracuse previously this season. She has made the most starts in the circle with 10 and through 69.1 innings of work, records the most strikeouts at 42.

In conference play, sophomore Haley Morse leads the team with a .600 batting average and 1.400 slugging percentage. With five at-bats, Morse recorded three hits including a double and a home run while also scoring twice in the series against McNeese.

Morse and sophomore Kimane Rogron are the only two players on the team to have hit at least one single, double, triple and home run this season. Rogron is also one of only two players to have started and played in every game this year.

Junior Pal Egan is the other player to have started in all 33 games. Overall, she leads the team with a .398 batting average and is currently on track to break the program's single-season record for slugging percentage (Brittney Morse, .651) and on-base percentage (Caley Jeter, .526) in which she records a .677 and .541, respectively.

Going into the series, Egan and sophomore Sydney Hoyt will be putting their 10-game streak of reaching base at stake. The longest streak on the team is set at 12 by Egan.

The Demons are third in the SLC rankings following week two of conference play, with a sweep over HBU and dropping only one game to Nicholls. They were picked to finish second in the preseason poll.
