Islanders Topped by Roadrunners

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - In a single midweek matchup, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program fell to UTSA 6-0 on Tuesday at Roadrunner Field.

UTSA (11-20, 4-5) got a pair of runs in the second, third and fifth innings to secure the 6-0 win over the Islanders (12-21, 0-3) who couldn't get their bats hot.

Junior Pal Egan and sophomore Kimane Rogron accounted for A&M-Corpus Christi's two hits of the game. Egan singled to left field in the third inning with two outs. She stole base to get in scoring position but the third out stranded Egan at second.

Rogron's hit in the sixth was also a single to left field which advanced junior Quinn De Avila to second. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third, but the Islanders couldn't bring them home and left the inning without a run.

Egan got on base three times during the game which extended her streak of reaching base safely to 10 games. She continues to improve and lead the team across the board, taking her batting average to a .398 and her slugging percentage to a .677.

Sophomore Sydney Hoyt was walked twice and is now also on a 10-game streak of reaching base. Hoyt leads the conference in walks per game with a .83 value and has been walked 26 times this season.

Making the start in the circle for the Islanders was senior Grace Gilbert who pitched for the initial 2.1 innings. She struck out three batters and opened the game with a three up, three down first inning. Freshman Siarah Galvan came in relief in the third. Galvan struck out seven batters, three of which were caught looking in the sixth.

In total, the pitching duo combined for a game-high of 10 strikeouts on the season.

The Islanders will resume conference play this weekend, hosting Northwestern State in a three-game series. Friday will feature a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. and the series will conclude after a 12 p.m. game on Saturday.
