A&M-Corpus Christi Blanks UNO to Advance to Championship Match

HOUSTON – For the second straight day, the top-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball program posted a sweep as it topped third-seeded New Orleans 3-0 on Saturday in the semifinals of the Southland Conference Championship at Third Coast Volleyball Club, hosted by HBU.
 
The Islanders (20-12) got it done in the middle of the lineup by winning courts two, three and four. Courts one and five went unfinished after A&M-Corpus Christi clinched.
 
"We are doing everything we can to remain connected and focused every round and it has paid off," said head coach Gayle Stammer.
 
On court two, sophomore Tori Johnson and freshman Jade Bennett won their second straight match of the tournament. They defeated Maxine Hayes and Hannah Volpi 21-17, 21-13.
 
Also improved to 2-0 in the tournament are graduate Kiley Lewis and senior Migle Mazurkeviciute. They ousted Trinity Jackson and Alexa Spartz 21-14, 21-18.
 
The team of Shea Slusser and freshman Kela Moreno shined on court three. The registered a 21-16, 21-9 victory over Liz Gialanella and Ivana DeCarvahlo.
 
The Islanders improved to 10-0 against SLC opponents this season. A&M-Corpus Christi is now 10-3 all-time against UNO and has won eight in a row.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi will await the winner of second-seeded HBU and the Privateers in the championship match at 1 p.m. Sunday. The winner of the SLC Championship will receive an automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Tournament in Gulf Shores, Alabama on May 6-8.
