Softball Looks To Continue Winning Ways Against Nicholls

THIBODAUX, Louisiana - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team will puts its five-game winning streak at stake this weekend when they travel to take on Nicholls at Swanner Field in a three-game conference series.

The Islanders (17-22, 5-4) are in a similar position to last year, when the 2021 season saw a five-game winning streak for the first time since 2015 heading into a three-game conference series. The team was edged out in a nine-inning battle to lose their streak last year, but will look to turn their luck around this year to win six games in a row, not done since 2011.

That chance will come Friday at 4 p.m. in game one of a doubleheader at Nicholls (10-29, 2-7). The weekend will conclude with a third game between the Islanders and the Colonels on Saturday at 12 p.m. A&M-Corpus Christi will also be looking for its third conference series win in a row after beating Northwestern State at home and then sweeping HBU with three shutouts in Houston.

At HBU, senior Grace Gilbert pitched for a 2-0 record and 0.00 ERA over the weekend. She is the reigning SLC Pitcher of the Week after tossing a complete-game shutout in game one and 3.1 innings of scoreless and hitless relief in game three.

Like Gilbert, freshman Siarah Galvan also threw a complete-game shutout against HBU in game two to earn her second win of the season. Galvan records the team's lowest ERA at a 2.63 and is the only pitcher to not record a loss on the season.

Junior Pal Egan continues to improve her record-breaking ways, sitting atop the program's single-season records for her batting average (.430), slugging percentage (.711) and on-base percentage (.558). She enters the series with Nicholls on a 16-game streak of reaching base. Egan recently hit her sixth home run of the season against HBU and also records 16 multi-hit games this season.

After getting injured earlier this season, junior Ashleigh Sgambelluri made her return to continue starting in every game she has played in. She recorded a hit and two runs in game two against HBU and recorded her first multi-hit game of the season the week prior against Northwestern State.

Sophomore Sydney Hoyt and junior Haley Morse sandwiched game two against the Huskies with two-run home runs. Hoyt's came in the the first, her first homer of the season, and Morse followed her up six innings later to homer in two runs in the seventh. Hoyt is averaging a .299 on the season while Morse records a .241 average.

Nicholls is led by sophomore Alexa Poche' and junior Melise Gossen at the plate. In the circle, the Colonels look to freshman pitcher Paris Lehman who records a 5.00 ERA, the lowest on the team.

Nicholls leads the Islanders 27-10 in the all-time record and 13-6 when the matchups have been in Thibodaux. Two wins this weekend for the Islanders would put their win count ahead of last season's 18 total wins.
