Islanders Win Twice on Senior Day

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball program went 2-0 on Senior Day with wins over Arizona Christian 5-0 and HBU 4-1 at Water's Edge Park on Saturday in the Conni & Jay Wise Islander Classic.
 
Between matches, A&M-Corpus Christi (18-8) honored Micaela Mirabal and Migle Mazurkeviciute in a special ceremony. Both are on pace to graduate this spring term with Mirabal pursuing her Master's in communications and Mazurkeviciute her Bachelor's in marketing.
 
Junior Giuliana Poletti Corrales and sophomore Brooke Pertuit, the reigning and three-time SLC Pair of the Week winners, posted another undefeated weekend. They breezed to a 21-11, 21-9 win over ACU before pulling out a 21-10, 15-21, 15-10 victory over HBU. The duo has won nine matches in a row and improved to 21-5 on the season on court one.
 
As a team, A&M-Corpus Christi did not drop a set against ACU. Sophomore Tori Johnson and freshman Jade Bennett cruised to a 21-12, 21-9 win on court two, and Mazurkeviciute and graduate Kiley Lewis won 21-7, 21-13 on court three.
 
On court four, junior Shea Slusser and freshman Kela Moreno won 21-7, 21-11, and the Islanders rounded it out with a 21-12, 21-6 victory from Mirabal and freshman Elizabath Cortez.
 
Against the Huskies, A&M-Corpus Christi got off to a strong 2-0 start with wins on four and five. Mirabal and Cortez teamed again for a 21-16, 21-18 win, and Slusser and Moreno came back for an 18-21, 21-16, 15-6 decision.
 
The Islanders clinched over HBU with a win on court two. Johnson and Bennett polished off Alison Stanfill and Abbey Reinard 21-14, 21-14.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi has won 18 consecutive regular season matches against SLC opponents.
 
The Islanders will conclude the regular season next weekend in Tallahassee, Florida for the Unconquered Invitational at FSU. Their first match is at 10 a.m. Friday against the host Florida State.
