Golf Set to Tee Off Monday at 2022 SLC Championships

CONROE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf team will begin its campaign for the 2022 Southland Conference Title Monday in the first of three rounds at Panorama Golf Club.

The tournament will be held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with one round played per day. A&M-Corpus Christi is paired with Eastern Shore and Delaware State in the opening group set to begin Monday with an 8 a.m. tee. Sophomore Lucie Charbonnier will start if off for the Islanders followed by the rest of the team subsequently teeing off in nine-minute increments.

Also representing the Islanders will be freshman Anastacia Johnson, freshman Reagan Gray, junior Lucy Martinez and graduate student Kellsey Sample. The front nine will be played on the club's Rolling Hills course, and the second nine is slated for the Thunderbird course, resulting in a par 72, 6,072-yard course for the event.

"I have a good feeling this week," said head coach Pat Stephens. "We are coming off a runner-up showing at Stetson, so the team is playing with confidence. We are healthy and always excited about playing in conference."

A&M-Corpus Christi is coming out of a successful spring campaign. Four of the five tournaments played this spring featured the Islanders finishing fourth place or higher, including a first-place tie at the UTRGV Invitational. At the Islander Classic, the Islanders turned in a 54-hole record-low score of 886 and most recently, the team turned in a runner-up finish at the Stetson Babs Steffens Invitational.

At the Steffens Invitiational, the entire team placed in the top-25. Charbonnier is currently on a five-tournament streak of placing 11th place or higher individually, four of which were top-10 performances.

"Our goal is to be in the last groups on Wednesday with a chance to win. The team is ready," Stephens said.

The Islanders will be competing for their second SLC Championship in program history and the first since 2009.

The Southland Champion will earn the conference's automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Regionals. Additionally, the individual champion, if not a part of the championship team, will be granted an automatic selection into the NCAA Regional Tournament. Qualifiers from the NCAA Regional Tournaments will earn a spot in the NCAA Women's Golf Championship, which will be hosted at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, May 20-25.
