CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Coming off of its conference opener, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program will host non-conference opponent Texas Southern in a midweek doubleheader on Tuesday at Chapman Field.
The Islanders (10-20, 0-3) are set to take on Texas Southern (11-12, 8-1) at 2 p.m. with a second game to begin upon the conclusion of game one. A&M-Corpus Christi is 4-4 at home while the Tigers are 5-9 on away games.
Senior
Grace Gilbert had an impressive performance as a two-way player in the conference series against McNeese over the weekend as she pitched a complete 10-inning game in game one and 5.2 more innings in game three. Gilbert struck out seven in the circle and then got one hit, one run and one RBI at the plate. She improved her ERA to a 4.78 and her batting average to a .241.
Junior
Pal Egan continues to improve her numbers while leading the Islanders across the board offensively. With a .391 batting average, Egan totals 34 hits, 25 runs and 19 RBIs. 11 of her hits have been doubles while five have been home runs.Â
Defensively, sophomore
Haley Morse records 84 putouts and 17 assists with three double plays. At the plate, Morse went 3-3 in game three of the series with McNeese which included a double and her first home run of the season and now has the third highest batting average on the team with a .266.
A&M-Corpus Christi finds itself ranked 28th in Division I softball for doubles per game and 30th for doubles. The Islanders also lead the conference in those two categories while Egan individually leads the conference in runs per game, slugging percentage and total bases. Nationally, Egan is ranked sixth for doubles and 21st for doubles per game.
Sophomore
Sydney Hoyt ranks eighth nationally and leads the conference for walks. Hoyt has been walked a total of 23 times this season and turns in a .308 batting average, right behind Egan.
The Tigers are led by sophomore Tamera McKnight who turns in a .346 batting average with 18 hits and 15 RBIs. In the SWAC Preseason Poll, the team was picked to finish first in the Western Division and have won eight of its nine conference games so far this season.
A&M-Corpus Christi leads the all-time record 20-7 over Texas Southern and is 12-4 at home against the Tigers. Both games of the doubleheader can be watched live on the Islanders Digital Network.
