Charbonnier Leads A&M-Corpus Christi to Runner-Up Finish

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - Another top-10 performance by sophomore Lucie Charbonnier led the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf team to a second-place finish at the Stetson Babs Steffens Invitational on Tuesday at the LPGA International-Hills Course.

The Islanders carded a 904 to tie with Boston University, but a scorecard playoff determined A&M-Corpus Christi as the official runner-up of the tournament.

"The team played better with each round," said head coach Pat Stephens. "We got contributions from everyone on the team."

Charbonnier ranked 10th in the field of 62 which marked her fifth tournament in a row where she has finished 11th place or higher and her fourth to place in the top 10. She carded a 73-74-78 - 225 total with 34 pars and seven birdies.

The entire team finished in the top-25 and were within six strokes of each other. Freshman Reagan Gray tied for 17th with a 228, graduate student Kellsey Sample submitted a 229 for a 19th tie and freshman Anastacia Johnson etched a 230 to tie for 22nd.

Junior Lucy Martinez rounded it out for the Islanders with a 231 total to tie for 25th. Despite Martinez shooting 81 and 80 on day one, she turned it around on the final day of the tournament to submit a 70, her career-low which moved her up 15 spots in the final standings.

Out of the five tournaments the team has competed in in the spring, the Islanders have placed fourth or higher four times, including a first place tie at the UTRGV Invitational.

A&M-Corpus Christi's next competition will be the SLC Championship on April 18-20. The team championship will be determined on the basis of 54 holes of stroke and the winner will be the automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship.

"The team is moving in the right direction heading into the Southland Conference Championship in a few weeks," said Stephens. "I feel with some rest and quality practice, the team has a great shot at the title."
