Softball Falls to McNeese in Series Finale

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Concluding its conference-opening series, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi fell 9-3 to McNeese on Saturday at Chapman Field.

A&M-Corpus Christi (10-20, 0-3) held tight with the Cowgirls (16-14, 3-0) to be tied 3-3 through four innings. McNeese struck early with a pair of runs in the first but the Islanders responded with one run in both the second and the third by sophomore Haley Morse and freshman Paolina Baez to tie it 2-2. 

Both teams tacked on a run in the fourth with a single RBI by McNeese and a homerun by Morse for the Islanders to tie the game 3-3. The Cowgirls ran away with the game with four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take the game 9-3.

Morse finished the day going 3-3 at bat and also recorded two runs, one RBI and a double in addition to her home run. Her strong performance improved her batting average to a .266 and marked her the sixth player on the team to have hit a home run this season.

After pitching a complete 10 innings in game one of the series, senior Grace Gilbert got the start again today and went 5.2 innings while also being second on the batting order. She struck out four Cowgirls in the circle and also recorded a hit and an RBI of her own.

Junior Quinn De Avila got a hit after her bunt rolled and stopped barely fair to make it on base while also advancing a runner. In the infield, she recorded two assists and her season-high of four putouts. Sophomore Kimane Rogron continued to be reliable at the plate during the series as she tacked on two more hits and an RBI.

Junior Pal Egan also got a hit at the plate and is now on a seven-game hitting streak. She leads the team with a .391 batting average and has started in every game this season. Recording 11 doubles, Egan ranks sixth nationally for doubles and 21st in doubles per game. The team is ranked 30th for doubles and 28th in doubles per game.

Also making the national rankings, sophomore Sydney Hoyt is ranked eighth for walks. She was walked once in the day's game against McNeese and 23 total on the season.

The Islanders will finish out their home stretch on Tuesday when they host in-state Texas Southern for a doubleheader. A&M-Corpus Christi leads the all-time record against the Tigers 20-7.
