Islanders Defeat UTRGV in South Texas Showdown

Final Results

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas
- The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track & field program defeated UTRGV 79-30 for the women and 76-64 for the men in the South Texas Showdown sponsored by NavyArmy Community Credit Union held at the Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.

"It was nice to see the team compete and compete hard, even in bad conditions," said head coach Brent Ericksen. "It's hard with the jumpers with steps and distance runners with laps as the conditions were really tough. I am happy with how we competed and it's always nice to win."

On the women's side, the Islanders won 12 of the 13 events they competed in with the men coming up with eight victories.

The women's 4x100m relay claimed the first victory with a time of 49.33s from a team comprised of freshman Bailey Cook, sophomore Capri Wilson, and freshmen Journi Williams and La Myia Styles. Senior Faith Bett followed up the performance shortly after with a 1500m win, clocking a time of 4:50.20 despite the wind pushing against her. Sharon Kiprop, a sophomore, came in shortly after in second for a time of 4:51.01.

Wilson claimed another victory in the women's 100m dash, clocking in at 11.85 as freshman Tranasia Jones later took home first in the women's 400m with a time of 58.67s. Bett took the 800m title, running a 2:20.46 in the performance.

The storm kept rolling in the favor of A&M-Corpus Christi as sophomore Jadyn Wagner edged out second-place with a 1:08.30 time. The Islanders rounded out the running events as Kiprop (10:27.20) won the 3K and a 4x400m team of Wagner, junior Riley Cowan, Jones and sophomore Yasmine Steele earned a time of 3:59.38 for yet another win.

Senior Erika Snyder won the women's high jump, leaping 1.62m in the air into the wind as senior Kiara Pickens earned first in the long jump (5.64m) and triple jump (11.67m).

In the men's 1500m, freshman Kelvin Kimaiyo took home first with a time of 4:09.39 with Tristan Stellmach, a graduate student, right behind him at 4:09.95. The duo later flopped positions in the 3K as Stellmach earned the win, narrowly edging out Kimaiyo with a time of 8:51.85.

Senior Ke'Tavion Humber (14.23) claimed victory in the men's 110m hurdles with fellow seniors Trpimir Siroki (13.42) and Daniel Armstrong (14.47) behind him. The trio all took their spots in the Islanders' all-time history books, sitting second, fourth and fifth respectively.

Sophomore John Moreno dashed a 50.37s time to win the 400m. Armstrong later won the men's 400m hurdles, clocking a time of 54.61s before a 4x400m team of Timor Barrett, a graduate student, Moreno, Humber and junior Leonardo Ledgister ran a combined 3:17.74 for the final victory of the day. On the field events side, freshman Jamal Dawson won the high jump with a 1.93m mark.

Ericksen is already looking ahead to the next meet, saying, "We've got big things coming up with the Texas Relays, specifically, and that's going to be some great racing up there."

A&M-Corpus Christi will next compete March 23-26 at the Texas Relays in Austin.
