Track & Field Hosts South Texas Showdown; First Time Since 2017

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Track & Field program will host the South Texas Showdown, marking the first time the Islanders have hosted since 2017.

"The track meet tomorrow is a unique opportunity to have a meet here at home," said head coach Brent Ericksen. "We're looking forward to battling UTRGV as part of the South Texas Showdown."

Track & Field looks to expand the Islanders' lead in the South Texas Showdown presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union as A&M-Corpus Christi leads 41 to 13. The two programs matched up against each other at the Rice University J. Fred Duckett Invitational in 2021. The Islanders were aligned to host the Islander Invite in 2020 but got canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The men's program is coming off of its best showing at the Southland Indoor Conference Championships, placing second at the meet with a variety of student-athletes finding success, highlighted by Senior Trpimir Siroki.

Siroki won Men's Athlete of the Year, Men's Outstanding Field Events Performer and Men's Newcomer of the Year. He set a new heptathlon men's long jump record by leaping 7.46m before winning the men's long jump, earning a 7.41m mark. Siroki has broken a variety of all-time Indoor records for the Islanders and will look to continue the success in his first outdoor season on the Island.

Last year, junior Leonardo Ledgister impressed the entire track community by placing sixth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 49.28s. The placing earned him All-American First-Team Honors. His all-time school record was set at the NCAA West Regionals en route to the championships.

Sophomore Capri Wilson also looks to improve upon the 2021 outdoor season where she qualified for the 100m dash at the NCAA West Prelims. She ran 11.47s at the NCAA West Regionals, placing her first all-time in the history of the program.

A&M-Corpus Christi had 12 different Islanders combine to earn 15 All-Conference Honors at the Southland Indoor Conference Championships. Siroki was named to the first team thrice as senior Preston Whaley also earned first-team honors for the men.

Senior Erika Snyder highlighted the women's side with a second-team honor. The women's 4x400m and Distance Medley Relays both earned third-team honors with the distance medley relay shattering the previous school record by 6.43s.

The meet will begin with field events at 10:00 a.m. as the men's hammer throw takes place and running events will begin at 12:00 p.m. with the women's 4x100m relay.
