LUBBOCK, Texas – Before getting a 10-day break, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program will face another tournament competition with the Texas Tech Tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Rocky Johnson Field.
The two-day tournament will feature A&M-Corpus Christi (10-12), Tulsa (6-12) and host Texas Tech (8-12). Play for the Islanders will begin Saturday at 11 a.m. against Tulsa and then end the day with a 4 p.m. matchup with Texas Tech. Sunday will have the Islanders playing back-to-back, rematching Tulsa and Texas Tech at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to conclude the weekend.
This will be A&M-Corpus Christi's fourth tournament and power-five opponent of the season. The Islanders are recently coming off a doubleheader with Baylor where they won the first game 2-1, the team's second win over a power-five school this season. A&M-Corpus Christi beat Syracuse 3-2 in a previous tournament last month.
In the matchup with Baylor, freshman
Denay Smith pitched her first complete game to get the win in the circle for the Islanders. Through seven innings, Smith held the Bears to their lowest scoring game of the season at one run. She improved her ERA to a 4.20 and struck out four batters.
Junior
Pal Egan leads the team across the board with a .375 batting average, 20 runs, 24 hits and 14 RBIs. She on a 12-game streak of reaching base, the longest on the team.
Egan is second in the nation and first in the conference for doubles.
Freshman
Monee Montilla had a big outing against Baylor as she got three hits, two RBIs and two runs, one of which came in the form of a homerun. She improved her batting average to a .286 and now has the second highest slugging percentage on the team at a .571.
Sophomores
Sydney Hoyt and
Gabriella Torres have brought consistency to the plate this season. Hoyt averages a .341 and has shown discipline as she has been walked 17 times, a team high. She is #15 in the nation for walks per game and first in the conference. Torres has started in every game this season and records 18 hits and 12 runs.
As a team, A&M-Corpus-Christi leads the conference in doubles, doubles per game and walks. Nationally, the Islanders rank 7
th in doubles, 24
th in doubles per game and 14
th in walks.
The all-time record between A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas Tech is tied 7-7. The Islanders will look to get their first win over Tulsa in program history.
