KYLE, Texas –The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf program tied for a fourth place finish out of 12 Division I programs after three rounds Monday and Tuesday at the Texas State Invitational at Plum Creek Golf Course.
Freshman
Anastacia Johnson led the Islanders the whole way and carded low 70s each round, the lowest of the team coming from her 71 during round two. She totaled a 218, six strokes better than her last performance at the CSU Ptarmigan Ram Classic, and ranked sixth out of 65 players.
Sophomore
Lucie Charbonnier was only four strokes behind Johnson and submitted a 222 to place herself at a tied seventh place individual ranking.
As a team, the Islanders submitted a 307-296-297 – 900, 18 strokes behind first place Brigham Young.
"I am very pleased with the team's performance," said head coach
Pat Stephens. "It was a very good finish, beating some strong teams. Annastacia and Lucie had a very good tournament with both finishing in the top 10 individually."
Junior
Lucy Martinez stayed consistent at a 74-78-76 – 228 to rank herself 22nd. Rounding it out was senior
Kelli Ann Dugan and graduate student
Kellsey Sample. Dugan recorded a 83-74-75 – 232 while Sample came up with a 86-80-78 – 244.
This was A&M-Corpus Christi's first top-half finish since the SHSU Bearkat Invitational back in September where the program placed sixth out of 14.
"Looking forward to what the remaining schedule brings," Stephens said. "We are starting to believe in our abilities and are playing with confidence."
The Islanders will next compete when they host the Islander Classic in San Antonio, Texas on Feb. 21-22 at the Alamo City Golf Trail.
